Me, Myself, and I

“Me, Myself, and I” was the must-have iconic 80’s song for a spot we were doing, and it was not licensable. So I had to find a way to make it happen, and did.

The problem?

De La Soul was a pioneer of sampling in hip hop, and it was layered… beats and tracks that vibed together, with many artists who may not have been credited on the background tracks, which ultimately became a challenge for them and anyone who wanted to use their tracks. So… their music catalog was stuck in limbo. There was not a chance in the world that we would be able to use the original track.

The fix?

Luckily, De La Soul had just released a new album and were on tour in Europe, so with the help of a music supervisor, we got them (yes, De La Soul) to re-record :30 of Me, Myself, during their tour. Their vocals perfectly layered on to a freshly-created and UNSAMPLED base track that matched the original.

The result?

Happy clients, happy creative team, and a supreme sense of accomplishment for pulling off what seemed impossible with not a lot of time.
